FYI, we are making some progress: http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2008-07/msg00884.php I am not sure we'll ever bother to fix the configuration-file issue, but other than that it does seem to be feasible to build universal binaries without major hacking on the source code as of CVS HEAD.
