Might I suggest you consider using dbmail as an IMAP server. This indexing you speak of is exactly what it will do. But the additional advantage with IMAP is that you can have multiple clients attached to the same folders (especially useful if shared) or be able to attach from multiple sources (notebooks, webpages, desktops) and have all the same messages/folders each time.
