What you are seeing is the grep command. If it where running you would see something like: 29041 ? S 0:01 /usr/lib/postgresql/8.4/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main -c config_file=/etc/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf Try: sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-9.1 start This should start Postgres.
