Is this generally true for all PostgreSQL systems on Linux, or only for specific use cases?

Scott, 

Is transparent huge pages turned off along with defrag?  Check 

/sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled

and

/sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag
Both should be configured with "never".
