I've never seen a Promise controller that had a Linux driver you would want to rely on under any circumstances. Adaptec used to have seriously bad Linux drivers too. I've gotten the impression they've cleaned up their act considerably the last few years, but they've been on my list of hardware to shun for so long I haven't bothered investigating. Easier to just buy from a company that has always cared about good Linux support, like 3ware. In any case, driver quality is what you want to research before purchasing any of these; doesn't matter how fast the cards are if they crash or corrupt your data.
