What you’ll do as a Database Architect at Akuna:

We are seeking a Database Architect looking for an exciting and challenging career at our top trading firm.  This person will lead all efforts across database design, deployment, maintenance, and monitoring. They will apply their expertise to automation of complex daily tasks, identifying and installing tools necessary to ensure operational success, and use creativity to design and build Akuna’s next generation global database environment. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, proactive, and able to take ownership of projects and problems with minimal supervision. In this role, you will:  

  • Architect and administer Akuna’s diverse database systems infrastructure, spanning on-prem and cloud environments
  • Lead end-to-end availability, performance monitoring, and capacity planning for Postgres and other database platforms
  • Analyze client queries for performance bottlenecks and partner with development teams to optimize and improve database usage
  • Research new hardware/software solutions, improving upon existing DB infrastructure
  • Mentor Systems and DevOps staff on database use and administration best practices and procedures
  • Own and evolve our backup/restore HA & BCP implementation

Qualities that make great candidates:

  • 5+ years of administration and architecting on-prem and cloud RDBMs such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Aurora, preferably in high-availability environments
  • Deep understanding of query plans and SQL statement tuning
  • Database capacity planning and trend analysis experience
  • Demonstrated experience in educating developers on optimal client SQL queries and query and schema design best practices
  • Desire to own and improve database schema, role, client connection, and change management best practices
  • Familiarity with open-source database monitoring and performance analysis tools
  • Comfortable in the Linux environment: command line, shell script basics, and system performance monitoring
  • Comfortable with configuration management systems, such as Ansible and Terraform, and a general Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) approach
  • CockroachDB or YugabyteDB administration and architecture experience is a plus
  • Experience with timeseries database systems (e.g. InfluxDB, TimescaleDB) a plus
  • C/C++ and/or Python experience a plus
