VMware's vCenter Server Common Infrastructure team is seeking a strong PostgreSQL backend engineer. Please contact Shanshan Song (shanshans@xxxxxxxxxx) for this job.

 

vCenter Server is the core control and system management software for VMware's virtualization product, which powers on 50% data centers with millions of deployment worldwide.  VMware has committed to PostgreSQL as core technology for vCenter server.  vCenter server appliance is in the transition from SQL Server and Oracle as our backend databases to PostgreSQL only.

 

This job offers the unique opportunity to:

-        Improve PostgreSQL to be more robust, scalable, available, and better performance

-        Work with the team that bet their future on PostgreSQL DB

-        Figure out best use of and extend PostgreSQL functionalities to meet our needs

-        Leverage VMware technologies to make PostgreSQL enterprise class of database

 

All your work to enhance PostgreSQL will go to upstream!

 

Furthermore, all PostgreSQL engineers in vCenter team have the flexibility of participating other PostgreSQL related projects in the team. Key areas we are currently working on:

 

-        Making PostgreSQL autonomous manageable

-        Enhancing physical replication technique to support higher availability

-        Supporting zero down time upgrade 

-        Supporting the larger scale of terabytes dataset

-        Supporting backup and restore vCenter appliance

 

Requirements:

-        PostgreSQL database backend development background with strong relational database fundamentals 
-        Familiar and stay current with industry best practices and trends related to database design and development.
-        Hands-on technologist of building high availability systems using PostgreSQL replication techniques
-        Hands-on technologist with a good mix of application development and database development

-        Solid Linux background

-        Proficient in C, C++ and Python programming languages

-        A solid foundation in computer science, with deep knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design

-        Extensive experience of building a large scale distributed system

-        Prefer to have experience of building virtual appliance

-        Excellent communication skills and team player

-        Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills

-        PhD or Master degree in Computer Science from a reputable university
