This assert is caused by a bug in the ldap libs, and can be lifted by 
upgrading to the latest version (2.1.21)
 
One problem remains : su will dump core if there is no root entry in LDAP. 
It won't revert back to the UNIX account info, so this will prevent su 
from working unless a root DN is present.

I'm gonna dig this out further, I will keep myself posted :)
