Everything works great up to getting the login prompt on the console (using mingetty). When I attempt to login using both root and a non-root accounts, I never get the password prompt, I do get the message
Session setup problem, abort.
Where upon I get the login prompt again. I can't look at syslog message as I can't get logged in. And I can't reboot single user, or equivalent, as this is a ram disk based system loaded off of a floppy.
I suspect a PAM problem as when I specify pam_unix instead of pam_permit (see below) in the /etc/pam.conf file I get a different message (which I don't remember) instead of the 'Session setup problem, abort."
OTHER auth optional /lib/security/pam_permit.so OTHER account optional /lib/security/pam_permit.so OTHER password optional /lib/security/pam_permit.so OTHER session optional /lib/security/pam_permit.so
I have triple checked libraries, permissions, paths, configuration files, etc.. I am not running a shadow password file or any other authentication mechanism.
Before I tear into the 'login' source to put in a bunch of debugging statements I figured I would try here. Any pointers regarding what is going on? I have looked over the mailing list archive as well as done extensive searches on the Internet to no avail.
Thanks!
Steve
