You'll have a very hard time getting pam_unix to use a different shadow file, because the code that specifies the location of the shadow file isn't in pam_unix -- it's in libc. These are the messages I get when logging in: This looks similar to a bug that showed up in Debian recently -- pam_limits was compiled with capabilities support, and a bug prevented the calling application from being able to set group memberships for the login. The bug has been fixed in the Debian package, but I don't know if there's anything that needs to be changed in the main Linux-PAM source. Steve Langasek postmodern programmer
