Maybe I could ask on the XFree86 list ?

I don't think so. Here is the output:

[root@hermes dumas]# rpm -V pam XFree86
S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/system-auth
.......T c /etc/security/console.perms
S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/xserver
SM5....T   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/encodings.dir
SM5....T   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/encodings.dir
missing    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/encodings.dir

(the missing font and the modified fonts are quite strange, but I don't think it
is related with my problem).

ls output for some of the X related files:

-rwx--x--x    1 root     root      1568256 Jan 23 07:23 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            8 Mar 15 18:59 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> Xwrapper
-rws--x--x    1 root     root         5168 Jan 23 07:23 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           27 Mar 19 14:04 /etc/X11/X -> ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

ps output with X running:
17718 ?        S      1:43 /etc/X11/X :0
