Good day from Singapore,

I have recently tried to send emails to Reuters News Agency (among a total of 27 international news media outlets) but received the following OpenSSL error.

Message not delivered

There was a problem delivering your message to contact@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. See the technical details below or try resending in a few minutes.

The response was:

TLS Negotiation failed: FAILED_PRECONDITION: starttls error (71): 6503550773440:error:1000012e:SSL routines:OPENSSL_internal:KEY_USAGE_BIT_INCORRECT:third_party/openssl/boringssl/src/ssl/ssl_cert.cc:605:

What does this mean? What is boringssl?

BoringSSL is Google's fork of OpenSSL. You should address any questions regarding it to that project instead:

https://boringssl.googlesource.com/boringssl
