Any advice would > be appreciated. > B.R martin > More likely, you have not installed the "openssl-dev", "openssl-headers" or similarly named package which provides the parts of an OpenSSL installation only needed when building software. Not installing that part of libraries by default is standard practice, as the total sum of all such parts for all installed libraries takes up a lot of disk space.
