Reading around, it seems to be caused by setting -xcode=pic32 but I need to set that because I am building a static library that will be linked into a shared library and that requires relocation. Changing the makefile so that the -xcode=pic32 flag is not passed when compiling .s files solves the problem but I am unsure if I will have an invalid build.
