Now, the obvious alternative solution would be to just use

There are many widespread alternatives for moving large amounts of data
which are used in science.
I'm working in LHC context... dCache is open source and provides
WebDAV, GsiFTP, xroot, NFS4.1.
Most (all?) other projects of the DDM software stack are also open
source, e.g. rucio.
I work in HPC and specifically in data movement so I'm aware of the
alternatives. The issue is that a *lot* of institutions, labs, and users
still make use of scp, sftp, and rsync to move data. We have been trying
to push people to use other tools for decades and they are still trying
to use ssh. So, from my perspective, it makes sense to meet users where
they are. However, I'm not suggesting OpenSSH do anything as I already
developed HPN-SSH to give users necessary performance. I'm simply asking
if there is any interest in a patch for HE for OpenSSH. If not I'll roll
it out in HPN-SSH and see if it's of value to our user base.
