There are many widespread alternatives for moving large amounts of data
which are used in science.

I'm working in LHC context... dCache is open source and provides
WebDAV, GsiFTP, xroot, NFS4.1.
Most (all?) other projects of the DDM software stack are also open
source, e.g. rucio.
