Agreed. I've checked with Fabian, who has no objection to them. I was
hoping for a comment from Kevin w.r.t. the Java side which we're also
going to have to modify to cope with the new API, but I think it's
definitely the right thing to do, even if I'm likely to screw the JNI
patch up on my first attempt :)

I'm travelling next week, so either it'll get done on a plane or it'll
take another week or so.
