Oh? And just how big is it now? We use BSDi3.0 with GCC version
2.7.2.1 and our nntpcached is 385024 bytes on disk.

We don't have this problem. I suspect pgcc1.0.1 because shlicc2
gave non-useful nntpcached's as well. Try again with gcc.
