Some basic understanding about .config file

Sorry for the earlier incomplete email.

Maybe I just don't know this too well, or there is some other bug that is reflected in this manner. I just want to clarify the way we can modify the .config file Some questions I have are: 

* If I have an old config file and I copy it over to a freshly downloaded kernel tree, do I necessarily need to run make oldconfig or make menuconfig would do the same trick?
* If I have run make oldconfig over the old config file, would it matter if I edit some more options using make menuconfig now?
