Did you check /var/log/messages for anything unusual?

Hello all. I have a question on hangs on shutdown. I am running a 2.6.31.5
kernel. The machine is running an athlon64 processor and the
motherboard is a MSI K8N Neo V2.0 H nForce3 250. Machine works great other
than hanging on shutdown. Looks like the hang is in
umounting the filesystems in preparation  for powering off. Almost looks
like the hard drives are powered down too soon. This happens
only after a long time running. Earlier kernels ( 2.6.25 ) don't do this.
System has 2 pata drives on the on board nvidia IDE ports and one
on a silicon image ATA controller. Reason for my confusion is that this in
new behavior  after  going to  the  2.6.3[0-1] kernel's .
any help  GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.  :-)

Nothing unusual in /var/log/messages. In fact when this happens, it looks like theres a missing
final flush of the filesystem. Another thing is that this does not always happen. Only after the
system has been running for a few hours and shutdown (10 or so) . I expect this will be a pain
to diagnose due to the intermittent nature. I have done memory and disk testing with no errors
found. Luckily the ext3 filesystem has suffered no damage so far but luck is not something I like
to depend on. Also power off shutdown does not finish when this happens but again it's intermittent.
