I don't think you're supposed to have a trailing backslash in a path.
IOW :
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt
instead of :
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/

Could this be the problem ?

Also, I don't see why you're specifying the file type - are you sure this
is the file system on sda ?
ie, I mount like this :

# mount /dev/sda1  /mnt

works fine for me.
