Seemed just the thing I was looking for.
I tried it with kernel parameter nmi_watchdog=1 as well as
nmi_watchdog=2  as per the above documentation, the count of NMIs in
/proc/interrupts was nonzero.
But nothing happened after 5secs of kernel hang.  Might be because of
the virtualized CPU provided by VMware to the guest OS.

So no progress...
