external VGA kernel detection

Hi to all,
            i am having linux installed on my laptop .but whenever i used to connect Projector to it it never used to show me new device has been detected to laptop.why? is there any way to make log in kernel buffer about such external VGA device like projector.
or how to know that projector has connected or removed by using kernel log or /proc ,/sys etc.
