Hardware Auto-Detection and Kernel AutoConfiguration

I've seen some discussion on this list about auto-detection of hardware and auto-configuration of the kernel.  I've been interested in doing something in this realm for a while and have thought about working on it as a Master's Project/Thesis.  Do some of the more seasoned members of this list have any suggested starting points? or know of any existing projects that might benefit from more work but also have enough work to fill a thesis?  Thanks.
