And 2G swap I see so it won't have been a real out of memory error. You are running a 32-bit OS meaning there is some variation among failure scenarios here.

Your hardware is just a bit too nice to be running 32-bit in the first place so first install a 64-bit OS (kernel and userspace). I expect you won't have trouble anymore after that.
