I suggest you start with http://kernelplanet.org/. It's an aggregate of a great deal (but not all) of people who work on the kernel. Other places to look might be the Linux Kernel Mailing List itself. Just sit around reading some messages for a while. Take note whenever you see someone complaining about something. A problem == a project. Think of it that way. :) Or go anywhere that tracks bugs, or performs benchmarks, and pick something lacking, and work on it! Try something like the Unix Hater's Handbook, or a silly site like http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/. Take any problem mentioned in a place like that, and fix it.
