waiting for device /dev/hda1 to appear

Hi,

I am trying to recompile kernel 2.5.15 on a machine with default configuration. I could build the kernel successfully, ramdisk was created but when I rebooted the kernel after ramdisk was loaded the booting procedure got stuck giving following message for around 10 seconds and then I was redirected to a shell. I could see the ramdisk loaded with different file systems like /proc and others present, but /dev/hda1 was not present.

--waiting for device /dev/hda1 to appear ----------------------

I thought it might be problem with this specific version of kernel so I tried repeating the procedure for 2.6.16, but the problem persisted. The base distro running on machine is 2.6.18, OPEN SUSE and this distro specific kernel works perfectly fine, boots up normally, does all work nicely. But custom compilation of any kernel is failing. If it was the problem with hardware I should have faced, I suppose with distro kernel also. The two kernels 2.6.15 and 2.6.16 are compiling perfectly fine on a virtual machine.

I thought there could problem with broken ramdisk, so tried seeing the presence of hardisk drivers (IDE and scsi) in ramdisk file which was created and they were there. As an alternative attempt I tried booting 2.6.15 with ramdisk of 2.6.18, here it failed with different error as expected. But the structure of ramdisk for both kernels stayed the same when I compared.

Could anybody help me out with the problem?

Thank you,
Mrunal
