Personally, I would start by picking a device on my system and
1) Finding the driver that it uses (a fun little exercise in itself)
2) Looking at and trying to understand the source code for that driver

I would also consider writing a driver for a device that I own. I'm
not sure what constitutes a good starting point in this regard though,
hopefully someone else can answer that.
