Installing 2.6.10 on RedHat4 Update 5 system

Hello,

I have a RedHat4 Update 5 (kernel 2.6.9) running on my
system. I am trying to get the stock 2.6.10 running
on this system.

I downloaded the 2.6.10 source code, used the config
file from /boot and build the kernel and initrd.
Initially I was getting errors like "...label not
found...". I fixed that using dev name diretly,
/dev/hd3. Now, when the kernel boots up, I get erros
like:

Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
....

Can someone give me pointers about debugging this
issue.

1. Is the issue because the right sata controller
driver is not loaded, as a result the kernel cannot
find the root partition?

2. I understand that the RH 2.6.9 may have driver
updates that allow it to run on my system. Would one
option be to look at the updates RedHat did to 2.6.9,
and applying some of those updates to my 2.6.10 and
try it out. Any other options?

Thank you
A.
