this isn't a real kernel question, isn't it?

both will run, the 32 bit and the 64 bit release but you /should/ use
the 64 bit release, of course (so you can use the full 64 bit of your
CPU). And yes, the programms are compiled for the 64 bit arch, if you
run the 64 bit version. You can run 32 bit programs in a 64 bit linux
too by using linux32 (http://linux.die.net/man/8/linux32). I use it to
run 32 bit skype and tile racer under 64 bit debian, what works fine
for me.
