i'm not sure about the problem , but i've got this error many times , and most of the time , the problem was about disk driver .
are you sure that you've compiled your disk's driver  correctly   ?
take a look at it :

For  Compilation of Linux-2.6.18 kernel

1.Extracetd the source.
2.Copied it to home dir
3.Make mrproper

UPTO these steps No errors occurred.
 
After this I  am uable to reboot with new linux 2.6  kenrel  
during reboot  linux2.6 kernel panic is happening.
 
VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL/" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append the a correct "root" =boot option
Kernel panic -not syncing:VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (0,0)
 
 
Please let me know the where I did the mistake.
