Regarding approaches to avoid unzipping cpio during boot process

Hi,
I have a small image and i want to boot it quickly. In my boot
process most of the time in spent in populating the rootfs. I want to
avoid unzipping the cpio and instead would not mind using a larger
image size. I am currently using initramfs.

Could you please tell me if the way to proceed would be to change the
kernel source or could I proceed in some other way. As I could not
understand the difference between initrd and initramfs could you let
me know if initrd is related to what i am attempting to do?

Thank you for any help.

Sincerely
Pradeep
