Hello, By default, in most Linux distros, /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward = 0 when setting it to 1, ip forwading is enabled. See : Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt And the explanation there says: "Forward Packets between interfaces.". My questions are: 1) What can be the usage of setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward to 1?
when your machine is configured with 2 different network interfaces then it can act as router between those 2 networks.
Could there be any usage for setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward to 1 when NOT using iptables (when the iptables service is down). ?
No usage.
2) Must there be two (or more) NICs in order that there will be any usage for setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward?
yes to experience usage of that you must have 2 NICs whose IP set to 2 different IP networks.
