I never had any problems compiling kernels or modules on any distro. If you want to compile a module against the kernel that is included with the distribution, you will need to download the kernel headers (you can usually find a package for that). If you want to install a module that you compiled, the current kernel version needs to be the same as the version that was used when you compiled the module. To give you more specific help, I would need to know the exact error message that you got. Use whatever distribution you like - I don't think you should ever have any problem in terms of development.
