How can I tell if my machine supports HPET? Is it a feature of the processor? The chipset?

chipset

Where do I look for it? The lack of documentation is pretty frustrating.

well it's even worse; HPET needs to be exposed by the BIOS (via acpi) to
the operating system, and there are many bioses out there from some well
known vendors that don't expose HPET on hardware that is HPET capable...
(and some have it as bios switch)

so there is no easy answer unfortunately...

added to k-newbies Glossary. feedback, corrections welcome here or there,
esp as it relates to other timers, rtc, etc
