cannot mount rootfs !!

Hi all
While booting a compiled kernel error i got error message "kernel panic - not syncing "VFS: unable to mount rootfs on unknown  block (0,0).

Error is not new we all have perhaps faced it at one stage.

My prob is no matter what, i cant boot the new kernel.

I gave the correct root option.

I compiled a vanila kernel 2.6.15 downloaded from kernel.org using make, then did make modules_install and then make install.

I can see new kernel image in the /boot but i cannot find any new initrd image in the /boot. Why is it so?

my rootfs is (hd0, 10) and boot partition is (hd0,8) . though i tried grub's command line to lcoate the kernel and initrd ( which i made then using mkinitrd ) it still gave me error . I gave root=/dev/hda11 as root partition but of no luck .

What am i missing here?

TIA

regards
