This is a bit ambiguous, are you talking about the latest e1000 driver
from Intel
(http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=983&DwnldID=4833)
or the latest kernel?

If you're using the Intel provided driver, you should build it outside
the kernel tree.
