runtime kernel memory reading

Hi all,

I can't find out what is the exact differenct between /dev/mem and
/dev/kmem. I've found out that /dev/mem is the physical memory,
while /dev/kmem is linear or virtual memory of the kernel.
But, as i've understood, only processes have virtual memory.
so what does /dev/kmem actually is ?

thanks a lot,
R.
