How does readprofile profile the kernel?

Hi,
I was curious to know how readprofile profiles the kernel (2.6.x). How
is it different from Oprofile? I know Oprofile uses hardware counters
to do the profiling, does readprofile do the same?
I also do not know the meaning of passing of parameter
"profile=1/2..." while booting the kernel. Somewhere I read the number
passed as an option determines the coarseness of the profiled output.
I would be glad if someone could throw some light on it or point to
relevant documents.
Thanking in anticipation.
