yes that is the right way ofcourse  they call the
kernel
API copy_from_user and copy_to_user,
anyway  i know only LKM's through which u 
read or write to kernel
rather u say device driver whole set of 
device drivers in Device driver book by rubini
are online .along with book,very interesting to 
try them out
