Running of 32 bit binaries on X86-64 / IA-64

Hi ,

I would appreciate if you could me point to a
document or explain , how 32 bit programs are
recognised and handled in the 64 bit Linux Kernel
on X86_64 ( Opteron ) or IA_64 ( Itanium ) processors
.

How & when is the processor mode switched for the
32 bit binaries ? Which part in the kernel sources
deals with this ?

Also what would be the packages required to run
the 32 bit programs on these 64 bit architechtures ?

Kindly reply directly to me as I'am not
subscribed to this list .

Cheers !
