I could be wrong, but I think everything is backward compatible.

One counterexample is module-init-tools, but it installs in a way such
that it falls back to the old versions.  I have been going between 2.4
and 2.5 for years now.

A more safe suggestion is to install Fedora.  They are moving it over to
2.6, and it works with both kernels.
