In fact, a correct guess, thank you.  Thru the least paranoid firewall
thru which I have access, what seemingly worked was:

setenv CVSROOT :pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/linux-udf
cvs login
cvs co udftools
cvs logout
