I probably didn't stated clearly at the beginning. So let me do it again.

I have 2.4.18-3 redhat distribution installed. a new device didn't work with the kernel. It was reported that the new device is compatible with 2.4.18-17 kernel. I assume it is not redhat distribution, but I may be wrong.

From ftp.kernel.org I only saw linux-2.4.18.tar.gz and patch-2.4.18.gz. There is no linux-2.4.18-17.tar.gz or patch17.gz, Or should be one? The Al Dev's 'The Linux Kernel HOWTO' didn't talk about how to parching particular version of a kernel.

Am I missing something here in terms of patching 2.4.18-17 kernel?

Are you looking for a RedHat kernel? They append an RPM release
number to the kernel source version number. I don't see any file
kernel-source-2.4.18-17.i386.rpm, though.
