Yeah, but those guys aren't working on replacing a running generic linux
system with another operating system. Those guys are working on replacing
motherboard-specific BIOS code with highly-specific "get the machine to
a useable state to load another OS"...

That is vastly different from a tool such as linload, which is what the
original poster was after -- some way to type:
# /sbin/boot-to WindowsXP
and have the running linux instance dissapear in a bright flash to the
windows boot splashscreen without waiting for the silly BIOS to spend a
minute pretending it knows what it is doing.
