"INIT: id 1 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"
"INIT: id 2 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"
"INIT: id 3 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"
"INIT: id 4 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"
"INIT: id 5 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"
"INIT: id 6 resopaning too fast: disabled for 5 min"

and trying to open GUI and failing andhanging afetr the above display....

 my /etc/fstab looks like

 [root@krishna root]# cat /etc/fstab
LABEL=/                 /                       ext3    defaults        1 1
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

Paste your .config here.

Check if you have mounted the correct root filesystem.
If you have elf compiled in.
Hmm, I think I don't know much more. 8)

But it does sound like that you forgot to compile in some critical
components.
