__clear_user()

I came across __clear_user() and could not understand the assembly definition.
Platform ppc, file /usr/src/mvl/arch/ppc/enet.c

immediately after kmalloc, the resultant pointer is passed to __clear_user(ptr, len).
It must be filling in the buffer with zeros, but why __clear_user()? it is called from kernel only..

Regards,
Om.
