Memory usage of Linux

Hey,

I was wondering how to tell how much memory Linux is using.

I know that if you let running Linux for a couple of days, it will be using +/- 90% of its memory and keeping some buffers cached.

And if a program is not used for some time, it will be swapped out. So if you don’t have a lot of wapping in and out, you don’t have a memory problem.

Can somebody explain how to interpret the shared, buffers, cached and so on?

Is there any guide about this subject?

Thnx,

Wouter
