The problem with examples is that they don't get maintained.

If you want too see a real external kernel module that works across 2.2,
2.4 and 2.5, handles modversions, SMP, etc. then look at :

http://oprofile.sf.net/

The autoconf script is of particular interest. Note that's x86 only,
but I think CIPE (see kernelnewbies.org) has similar thing ...
