I have not used ppp. For the rest, I have some suggestions
Try a make bzImage and reduce make other unneeded components of kernel. 
A good idea is to install the kernel sources with redhat and look at 
their config for reference.
As for CDs, ensure you have ISO9660_FS as builtin.
